KKSF embraces “progressive talk”

After an absence of six years, progressive talk radio has returned to San Francisco.

It’s called “Real Talk 910” (KKSF) and features a nationally syndicated programming lineup familiar to Bay Area listeners. At various times from 2004 to 2012 Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartman and Norman Goldman were heard on San Francisco station KQKE (AM 960 The Quake), later called KKGN (Green 960).

In a news release announcing the launch, Don Parker, iHeartMedia San Francisco senior vice president of programming, said of the on-air show hosts: “Given their alignment with the liberal-leaning make-up of the Bay Area, we believe they will resonate well with listeners.”

Station owner iHeartMedia is betting on success in today’s “politically charged” environment with a format “featuring forward-thinking political talk and opinions that
embrace the values of social, economic and environmental justice, along with human rights, democracy and multiculturalism.”

The station is also introducing listeners to new podcast content, beginning with the iHeartRadio “Daily Dive” news podcast, which airs weekdays at 5:40 a.m. Additional
podcast-originated content is planned for the weekday and weekend programming schedule.

The podcasts are intended to “take advantage of being based in the tech capitol of the world”. Kathryn Wilcox, president of iHeartMedia San Francisco Region said, “Broadcast radio has always been a top source for music discovery and now that applies to podcasts, too. It is a station built for the digital world recognizing that people find and consume content across multiple platforms.”

The “Real Talk 910” weekday lineup features Miller from 6 to 9 a.m., Hartmann from 9 a.m. to noon, consumer expert Clark Howard from noon to 3 p.m. and Goldman from 3 to 6 p.m.

The new format replaces Spanish Sports “ESPN Deportes” KKSF. Cory Callewaert is the station’s new program director.
